Dell Precision 17 7730 Review | Is It Worth Buying?

If you need the most powerful laptop, regardless of cost or size, look no other than the Dell Precision 17 7730. This workstation has flaming quick performance and an adorable 4K screen with beautiful colors. Factor in a comfortable keyboard, top structure, and solid build quality, and this device hits (almost) all the correct notes.

The Precision 7730’s 17-inch screen gives you a home theater viewing adventure. Its multicolor 4K panel is prominent, and the colors it delivers are striking.

The panel reproduced a staggering 211 percent of the sRGB color gamut, gaining among the top ratings. While the Lenovo ThinkPad P71 (183 percent) and HP ZBook 17 G4 (173 percent) were also impressed, their panels were no near as bright as the Precisions. The workstation average is much down, at 149 percent.

With this device’s matte display and excellent peak brightness, you should have no problem using the Precision 7730 on a sunny day. The display had a greatest luminance of 330 nits, which is higher than the ThinkPad P71 (283 nits) scores and HP ZBook 17 G4 (256 nits). The workstation average is also murkier, at 325 nits.

Dell Precision 17 7730 Overview

“Precision” is a term that refers to accuracy and performance. It’s no wonder that Dell named its high-performance workstation brand after this. This assessment will focus on the Precision 7730, a 17.3-inch device that replaces the Precision7720.

Although the market for mobile workstations remains small, it is an appealing sector for OEMs due to its high demanding prices.

Despite not having the most delinquent HP device, Dell is battling for a share of the mobile workstation market. We have the ThinkPad P72 Celsius H980 and the Precision7720 to experiment with the Precision 7730.

The Precision 7730 is almost similar in build to its previous models. Although the Precision 7730 case is more minor, it has the same keyboard, trackpad, and ports display as the Precision 7720.

With an actuation pressure of 69 grams and crucial travel of 1.6 millimeters , the chiclet-style keyboard with Numpad is comfortable, even in elongated typing. Heavy and tactile, the backlit keys deliver great feedback and are spacious.

PROS

  • Top-end Nvidia Quadro P5200 graphics, Core i9 processor, 4K display in the test unit.
  • Two Thunderbolt 3 ports.
  • Category-leading performance, as configured.

NVIDIA Quadro P5200

The Nvidia Quadro P5200 is a high-end portable workstation graphics card for laptops. Identical to the consumer GeForce GTX 1080 (Laptop).

It is established on a GP104 chip with 2560 shaders but uses a bit slowly GDDR5 instead of GDDR5X of the GTX1080. The Quadro P5200 is the successor to the Quadro P5000.

There will be a regular (Max-P) and a slower but more efficient (Max-Q) card variant. For the Max-P variant, the clock paces are appointed from 1556 (base) to 1746 MHz (Boost), and the power-efficient Max-Q clocks from 1316 MHz (bottom) to 1569 (Boost), according to a GPU-Z screenshot from a reader (-15% / -10%). The 16 GB GDDR5 is clocked at 3,6 GHz showing a memory bandwidth of 230 GB/s.

The Quadro GPUs present certified drivers optimized for strength and performance in professional applications (CAD, DCC, medical, prospection, and visualizing applications). Therefore, the performance in these areas is much better than corresponding consumer GPUs.

Secure

Dell offers creative data security solutions to manage business concerns and security challenges. These resolutions help protect your most helpful asset, data.

The end users can use Dell Data Security solutions wherever and whenever they like understanding their data is secure. The Dell Endpoint Security Suite powered by Cylance stops up to 99 percent of malware.

Dell’s most effortless retail line of PCs features the Dell Client Command Suite toolkit, which allows for mechanical and flexible BIOS formattings. Optional vPro extensions enable out-of-band system management.

What is the Hidden Weapon?

Assume we glimpse at one of my famous laptops in Dell’s accuracy range. This mobile workstation laptop packs a powerful punch, leaving many experts shocked or pleased. This is a perfect device for other kinds of careers.

 It comprises:-

  • Engineering,
  • Gaming
  • High-end information modeling,
  • Video and photo editing.
  • Virtual-reality content design,
  • Graphic design

Performance

The theoretical performance should be a bit above the older Quadro P5000. Although the clock speed increase is not yet known.

The power consumption is rumored to be a lot higher, which should lead to noticeably improved performance. Nvidia specifies a theoretical peak performance of 8,9 GFLOPS (Single Precision).

Power Consumption

The power consumption of the Quadro P5200 is specified by Nvidia as 150 Watt (Max-P) and rumored to be 100 – 110 Watt for the Max-Q variant. Therefore, it is much higher than the Quadro P5000 versions (100 Watt and 80 Watt).

In its seemingly infinite wisdom, Dell lets customers choose the GPU or CPU by providing multiple configurations with Intel, AMD, or NVidia graphics cards or processors.

This was a smart move because they smartly avoided the whole NVidia vs. Intel fiasco vs. AMD and let the fanboys decide for themselves. So far, it seems to be operating.

Physics-Defying Design:

  • Work Without the Workout:  Created with suitable materials, the new 17″ Precision 7730 is 16% shorter than previous models.
  • Part of an Entire Workstation:  With single-cable docking and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, a large file share is fast & easy.

Reliable

The Precision 7730 has passed MIL-STD-810G testing. It can resist drops and shocks and is invulnerable to temperature, humidity, dust, heat, and vibration. This system is not mobile, so it won’t be your direct tool in the field. But, it can fight some abuse if it ends up in dangerous environments.

You can test ultra-high-end unit with the Dell Ultrasharp 17-inch display option. This panel has a 4K resolution (3840 by 2,160 pixels) and IGZO technology.

IGZO stands for indium gallium zircon oxide and is an occasional option for IPS-style panels. It offers the same off-center viewing angles as IPS screens and has a decisive difference and color performance.

This resolution is more critical than the aboriginal 4K. Experts who work in programs may find this resolution very reasonable, allowing them to use more of their digital screen space.

It can also benefit those accomplishing 4K video, photo, or 3D editing. Everybody else will need to decide how much they require it. The 4K IGZO screen adds $182 to the base model’s cost.

It feels a little less stylish because it has thicker bezels than the Precision 5530’s thin display. While the screen’s quality is good, it’s not remarkable. The Precision 5530’s 4K display was awe-inspiring.

  5. Intel Core i9-8950HK

Software and Warranty

The Precision 7730’s Windows 10 Pro operating system doesn’t have much-preinstalled software. What’s inside is pretty useful, like Dell Power Manager, which follows the health of your battery, and PremiereColor, which lets you adjust display color, brightness, and white balance.

In total, 10 Dell-branded apps deliver general warranty and tech aid and help you optimize the workstation’s rendition. One particular program is the Dell Precision Optimizer, which uses AI to auto-optimize applications.

The bloatware Microsoft typically brings to Windows 10 is primarily missing on the Precision 7730. A few apps remain, like Microsoft Solitaire Collection and LinkedIn, but Candy Crush games are nowhere to be found.

The Dell Precision ships with a three-year guarantee, upgradable to five years with on-site restoration assistance.

Configurations

The Dell Precision 7730 begins at $1,479 for the base model, which comes with a 1600 x 900 display, an Intel Core i5-8300H CPU, integrated Intel HD GFX graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a 500GB and 7,200-rpm HDD.

Our $5,534 check unit has a 4K display and ramps up the details to an Intel Core i9-8950HK CPU, an Nvidia Quadro P5200 GPU, 32GB of memory, and dual 512GB PCIe NVMe SSDs.

A top-of-the-line Precision 7730 has the same 4K display and P5200 GPU but promotes you to an Intel Core Xeon E-2186M CPU, 128GB of RAM, and 8TB of SSD storage. This version costs $10,928 without any add-ons.

There are infinite design possibilities to customize the Precision 7730 to your liking. Dell offers i5, i7, and Xeon CPUs; Radeon Pro and Nvidia Quadro GPUs; four 32GB RAM slots for up to 128GB; and up to four 2TB SSDs for up to 8TB.

You can also modify RAID configurations, boost to a backlit keyboard, increase the battery from 64Wh to 97Wh, and opt for a fingerprint reader.

Prices

The Precision 7730 is an ideal workstation with a class-leading version and a brilliant, dazzling 4K display. A comfortable keyboard, premium design, and capable GPU are icing on the cake. I wish the laptop’s battery life lasted a few hours longer and the chassis didn’t get warm under a severe workload.

The Precision 7730 faces a brutal contest. The $6,059 HP ZBook 17 G4 also has a beautiful display and super-fast performance, but it stayed calm during our testing and has much longer battery life.

On the other hand, the HP workstation’s presentation is rather dim and has a flat design. The $4,643 Lenovo ThinkPad P71 is another practical workstation; it has a color-correcting 4K panel and an excellent keyboard. However, the P71’s hard drive can’t keep pace with the Precision 7730’s.

The Precision 7730 is an excellent all-around workstation that I recommend — if you can afford it.

The mobile Quadro P5200 generally exceeds the desktop Quadro P4000 in Viewperf 13.0. Viewperf is an industry-standard standard for workstations. It concentrates on the workstation’s visual performance.

Viewperf version 13 was dismissed recently. Here, I show the natural comparison between the Precision 7730 and the Precision 5820 Tower.

This mobile workhorse takes on high-end tasks. My mobile project is video-related, and I did the initial trials with Adobe Premiere Pro CC. The expected results are incredible.

Rendering Tests

dell precision 17 7730

It is a reward for anyone working on a video to have a high-performance GPU like the Quadro P5200. I work fast and efficiently with complex video pieces, and this GPU yields all my tests faster than in real-time. Saving time on rendering is vital.

The Precision 7730 is 38% to 48% faster in my rendering tests.

Video rendering is a procedure that GPUs have revved for a long time. I would be lecturing the ensemble to tell video professionals that they should be using a fast GPU.

However, I include a comparison of GPU-accelerated rendering versus software-only rendering for those readers who may need to persuade leadership. My tests with the Quadro P5200 deliver 3 to 10 times the performance of software-only rendering.

My rendering tests in Premiere Pro also indicate that rendering performance rankings well with more powerful GPUs. II compare the Precision 7730 and its mobile Quadro P5200 with the Precision 5820 Tower and a desktop Quadro P4000.

The advantage of the P5200 is dramatic and unmistakable. In each rendering test, the Precision 7730 rendered the video: 38% to 48% faster.

In addition, the 7730’s Quadro P5200 was utilized at 100% capacity. This indicates that rendering performance will persist in growing with faster GPUs.

CONS

  • Giant and Weighty.
  • The build is elegant but dull.
  • Battery life issue.
  • The main concern with the Precision 7730’s battery life is its inexplicable size. The ThinkPad P72 is more suitable for those who need to work from home.
  • It also has unacceptably elevated temperatures and laboriously throttled its GPU and CPU on battery.

It is very disappointing to see a backlight bleeding on a workstation. We also cannot comprehend why Dell removed the fingerprint scanner from the Precision 7720.

The Precision 7730 is an ideal workstation with extended battery life. If you plan to use the machine while traveling, you must always have your charger. However, the Precision 7730 is too weighty to be used as a mobile workspace.

The Conclusion

dell precision 17 7730

You can fit it to stay on your table as your workhorse desktop alternate. It is a heavy device. It’s not a laptop you’d look forward to carrying home on your commute or dragging along for a journey.

It takes up most of any normal-size carry-on, and its weight wears on your shoulder fast. It’s a mobile workstation, but the focus is on the workstation. Its little brother, the Precision 5530, is a much more attractive choice for folks who need to tour with their device, at 0.66 by 14.1 by 9.3 inches and 3.93 pounds.

The good news is that this big body is high quality. The chassis is black plastic, with a carbon-fiber finish on the lid for a top touch. The design is terrific, and Dell Precision 17 7730 build is exceptional.
