Effective Ways to Make Your Internet Faster

A slow internet connection is the last thing you would want when you are trying to relax after a long, hard day. Imagine you tune into Netflix and can’t seem to load an episode of your favorite show properly because your internet is acting up. In those cases, one of the things you could do is to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP), for instance, you could call the Xfinity number if you have Xfinity internet so that they could guide you further on how to improve your internet connection.

However, there are other simple ways that you can follow to make sure that your internet connection is faster than before and so are your downloads.. Keep reading to find out how!

Get as Close to your Router as you can

As simple as it sounds, the first thing that you should try doing is to get as close to your router as possible. What this does is it strengthens your WiFi signals as much as possible. The further you move away from your router, the slower your internet is going to be. This is why you should be mindful when you are placing your router, it should be in a place where the WiFi signals are equally divided throughout the house.

When we say move as close to your router as possible, we don’t mean sitting right beside it. You can move closer to the router’s proximity and you will see a significant positive change in the performance of your internet. Another thing you need to make sure of is that there are as less walls between you and your router as possible since walls cause obstructions in the way of your WiFi signals. The same is with pieces of furniture, so make sure that the room your router is in is as clear as possible.

Managing Background Data on your Computer

When we say “computer”, it could either be your laptop or your PC. If you notice a difference in the internet on your phone and your computer, then it is very likely that your computer is running a lot of programs in the background. The apps and programs that run in the background usually tend to take up a lot of bandwidth, which decreases your internet speed overall. What you need to do is that you need to access these apps in the background and stop them from running.

To stop apps and programs from running in the background, you need to open the Task Manager by right-clicking on your taskbar. Click on the option that says Network under Processes so that you could see which programs use the most bandwidth. Whichever program is using the most bandwidth, right-click on it and then click on End Task. Not only do you save up on bandwidth this way but you can also reduce the usage of your RAM, which will speed up your computer.

Update your Computer and Router

When you update the software version of your computer and the firmware of your router, keeping them up to date ensures that all bugs are fixed. This makes sure that your devices are working as flawlessly as possible. If you keep both of them on their default software, your devices will not be optimized for faster functions. Therefore, you need to keep a keen eye out for the updates as soon as they roll out so that you can maintain functionality.

You may also update the drivers on your computer so that the devices work error-free. To update them, you need to head to the Device Manager and then the Network Adapters. Select your adapter and update it either through the local files on your computer or through the company’s website. To update the firmware of your router, you need to access the router’s interface through your browser by reading the instructions with the router. Over there, you can find the option to update the firmware for better functionality.

Clearing out your Browser’s History

As sketchy as it may sound, even clearing out your computer’s browser history can help. All you need to do is go to the section that allows you to clear out your browsing data and you need to clear the cache, history, and cookies. This allows your browser to load web pages a lot faster. If you are using Google Chrome, all you need to do is open the menu for Chrome by clicking on the three dots on the top right, click on More Tools and then simply click on Clear browsing data and the browser will delete everything for you. You just have to make sure you are deleting everything from the start and not just part of it.

Here you can delete all of your visited pages, cookies, and other data and all the cached images that take up unnecessary space. Once you check all of these options, hit Clear Data and you are good to go!
